Another Showdown Coming for Florida’s 20th Congressional District Seat

Last November, Sheila Cherfilus-McCormick made history becoming the first ever Haitian Democrat elected to Congress. She won by five votes over political powerhouse and former Broward County Commissioner Dale Holness.

Elections are on November 8 and it’s bound to be a fight. Rep. Cherfilus-McCormick is not going down easy. Cherfilus-McCormick, a business owner, raised more than $1.6 million and a bevy of local support to garner her seat. Holness is ready for the rematch, but has only a sliver of that funding. He does have the support of many elected officials like Fort Lauderdale Mayor Dean Trantalis, Margate Mayor Antonio Arserio, North Lauderdale Commissioner Regina Martin, and Tamarac Commissioner Marlon Bolton.

Florida’s 20th Congressional District is the most Democratic seat in Florida, and covers many Black neighborhoods sprawling from Broward to Palm Beach County, including neighborhoods like Pompano Beach and Belle Glade. It was represented by former representative Alcee Hastings who died in office in April 2021.
