Writing can be a fun and enjoyable activity, even though some people find it difficult or painful. Regardless, all of us always want to write something that sounds better and resonates with our message. Excellent writing is simple and involves delivering a relevant idea directly and clearly. There is a world of advice that you can read if you wish to write better. However, this isn’t the only way to make your writing sound good – others include:
Choose Specific Words
It is wise to use specific words. Doing so will help you keep your writing to the point and concise. For instance, rather than “several students,” write “ten students,” unless you are unsure about the number or amount. Using a specific figure or number will draw your readers’ attention and give them a more detailed path to follow.
Use Simple Words
Avoid trying to impress your readers with complex sentences and big words since they will only make your writing ineffective. Choose simple words like “near” instead of “proximity,” “use” instead of “utilize,” and “start” instead of “commence.” Only use longer words if your meaning is so specific that no other terms will apply.
Use Active Voice and Vivid Verbs
Avoid using a passive voice or leaving your sentences without subjects, as it looks like you’re avoiding responsibility. Write, “he wrote a book” instead of “the book was written.” Avoid using the verb “to be.” Write, “he ruled the country with an iron fist” instead of “he was ruling the country with an iron fist.” For an active voice, use SVO (Subject Verb Object) sentence sequence. Don’t use OVS (Object, Verb, Subject) or a passive voice.
Shorter phrases make your writing more appealing and easier to read, while longer phrases, although technically precise, make your writing muddy. Use “lack of resources” rather than “don’t have the resources,” or “because” instead of “in view of the fact that.”
Remove Fluff Word
Avoid fluff words such as “very”, “rather”, and “little”. These words add nothing in terms of meaning and make your sentences look wordy.
Keep Your Paragraphs Short
Always keep your paragraphs short as it makes your writing more interesting while simplifying it. Short paragraphs are noticeable in many newspapers or blogs. This is because our brains are structured to absorb information better when fragmented into smaller, digestible chunks.
To improve your writing:
1. Pay attention to your word choice.
2. Always use concise and clear words.
3. After writing, review your work, and spend time re-reading.
