Listen, the choice is obvious. Either way you swing it, you simply can’t vote for that guy! Are you crazy? Politics is so divisive. You HAVE to pick a side. So, the beauty of last night’s vice-presidential debate wasn’t whatever Kamala Harris and incumbent Mike Pence were talking about. Racism? Classism? Chauvinism? Pretty prisms? Ism-schism? I don’t know. What I do know is that during the debate a little insect stole my attention and helped me put life back into perspective.
If you watched the debate live, you saw a fly get cozy in Pence’s pretty white hair for what seemed like 30 minutes (it was two). If you didn’t see it live, there are tons of memes floating around. The two were inseparable, every movement Pence made, the fly was right with him. Flies like poop, so I laughed and screamed ‘doo-doo head’ at the TV screen! At that moment, I realized that none of this matters. “This” – meaning the bickering, the hate, the mean mugs, the war that was unfolding in front of my eyes. Of course, the issues of racism, financial security, the economy, policing, and healthcare are all very critical topics, and need to be discussed before the public casts their vote on Nov. 3. Still, that fly brought the unity of laughter and unpredictability of nature to everybody watching.
My conclusion is, basically, we’re all taking ourselves too seriously. We’re not even in control, honestly. If a fly can steal the show at one of the most crucial political debates, then we should know that we don’t have all the answers. Nor do we need them. Let’s just live together, laugh together, enjoy nature and its wonder together. Last night showed me that as a nation, we need to be humble and submit ourselves to God’s will. We can show our appreciation by taking the time to laugh at the small things. What a beautiful world it would be if we respected the things that brought us joy and cherished the unknown instead of fearing it.
While I’m done with the separatist nature of politics, I can’t encourage you all enough to exercise your right to vote. Vote for the candidate that makes you hold on to their every word like the fly on Pence’s head last night. The choice is yours. Remember, whatever happens on Nov. 3 isn’t the end all be all. There really is more to life.
