So often we talk about the “fountain of youth.” Since Ponce de Leon’s travels in the 16th century, people have been trekking thousands of miles to find this fountain. It hasn’t been found so far, but Dr. Aubrey de Gray has come pretty close. With he help of his biologist wife, he wrote papers on how certain mutations can lead to the decay of cells and tissues, ultimately changing how aging specialists view old age. It led to the idea that we need to be regularly maintained, just like a well oiled car, to slow aging, for the damage of accumulation not to take effect. His first book in 1999 was he Mitochondrial Free Radical Theory of Aging, but the real groundbreaking piece of literature was “Ending Aging” which was published I 2006. It was a look on how to keep death away through repairing or regenerating cells. He later gave a TED Talk that gave the controversial opinion that aging isn’t natural – it’s a medical condition we can cure.
